LPI102: Preparing for the LPI 102 Certification Exam

Rev. 1.0

This focused hands-on course provides the knowledge and skills needed to pass the LPI 102 Certification test. In this course you will learn how to use Linux System Administration tools to configure and manage a system but the focus will be on the LPI defined testable materials.

The LPIC-1 Certification is becoming the main solution available for anyone who desires to position themselves as a Linux System Administrator. It has been endorsed by IBM, RedHat, Caldera and many other industry leaders as an acceptable demonstration of basic Linux administration skills. The LPI Exams are controlled by the non-profit, community oriented group known as the Linux Professional Institute http://www.lpi.org/ . Born out of discussions in Linux Journal magazine bemoaning a lack of an industry accepted, community supported way for Linux professionals to certify their skills; the LPI group has defined a structure for testing and certification. The stated purpose of the LPI is to define test criteria and certification levels. They endorse no specific way to prepare for the exam, leaving that up to the individual.

The LPIC-1 Certification consists of 2 exams offered at VUE testing centers nationwide. The first exam is the LPI 101 exam and covers basic command line skills, file editing and manipulation, job control, basic system administration such as rebooting, adding users and setting permissions. The LPI 102 exam covers more advanced skills such as X Window configuration, package management, scripting, kernel control and dealing with hardware.
